SUMMARY

This report assesses the world’s leaders in autonomous vehicle (AV) development, highlighting challenges, solutions and key trends.

According to the index, these are the top five AV world leaders: 1) Netherlands, 2) Singapore, 3) Norway, 4) United States, and 5) Sweden. The term autonomous vehicles (AVs) describe a range of vehicle automation standards. The term AV refers to technology used within vehicle and externally, such as digital networks and smart sensors. AV also refers to fully self-driving vehicles, sometimes called ‘level 5 automation.’

As Internet of Things (IoT) devices and systems develop, IoT in traffic and transportation will be significant in reducing energy consumption, traffic, and driver safety. Which countries are advancing this IoT sector? This index grades the readiness of 25 different nations. The index uses data from a wide-range of sources to determine a country’s autonomous vehicle readiness. Each market is assessed on policy and legislation, technology and innovation, infrastructure, and consumer acceptance. What does this index teach readers about IoT developments in the AV sector?

AV experts provide highlights between index indicators and areas of potential growth. Advanced AV markets should invest more in research and innovation, outpacing other markets. Countries with high technology and innovation scores generally have mid-level scores in their AV regulation and institutions. These countries can improve their AV readiness by adapting and revising regulation, and establishing AV-focused institutions. Most countries that perform well in infrastructure readiness do not perform well in the policy/legislative index indicators. Finally, developing AV markets could take advantage of growing consumer interest by increasing policy and technology investments.

This report is aimed towards public sector organizations with responsibility for transport and infrastructure. Other public or private organizations that are associated with road transport will also be interested in the information in this report.
