State of Play in Europe, USA and Asia

SUMMARY

This report presents an insight into the 5G development in the major global economies including Europe, USA, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.

It groups Korea and Taiwan as the producer of 5G, Singapore as a consumer while others as both. The report compares 5G developments in these countries, based on technical and economic conditions.

Europe is leading in 5G in many aspects. For instance, many pilot programs are underway trails and testing across different cities of the region. It is also home for some key equipment suppliers like Nokia, Ericsson, and ARM, which provide a strategic advantage to the region. Additionally, some technical regulatory bodies like ETSI/3GPP are also situated here.

The estimated cost to meet 2025 5G connectivity targets in Europe will be around €500 billion. The target is supposed to provide 5G coverage to all urban areas of the region. 5G trend is reliant on technology and driven by key stockholders like governments, component suppliers and telecom investors. Moreover, it is costly and complicated. There are irregular outlines for the 5G technology spread. Consequently, it will take much more time to be matured than expected. Such as, China is expecting that it will take at least 10 years for 5G to be fully commercialized in the market.

The report concludes that long term R&D efforts needed for the success of 5G in Europe. Besides, business model studies are also essential to define the economic scope of this technology.
