SUMMARY

This report evaluates the outlook of 5G and studies the investment requirements for infrastructure from public and private sectors, in countries which are preparing to launch 5G.

The report finds important issues which need to be considered by policymakers during planning. It also estimates the cost of 5G deployment. The cost highly depends on the commercial feasibility of fibre backhaul, along with the other factors. The countries with undersized fibre arrangements are spending more to improve it for the smooth process of 5G deployment.  For instance, UK announced in 2016 to spend almost $905 million to increase fibre backhaul in its networks.

On average, the 5G deployment cost can be $6.8 million for small cities and go up to $55.5 million for dense cities. Policymakers can assist in high deployment costs by regulating affordable spectrums, providing incentives and facilitating public-private partnerships.

The report confirms that the commercial 5G deployment cannot take place before 2020. Also, 5G connections are expected to reach 1.1 billion by 2025, which would be around 12% of the total mobile subscriptions at that time. Operators revenue is expected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2025, with a CAGR of 2.5%.

The report concludes that the deployment of 5G is reliant on the policies which facilitate the investments by regulating the portfolio of wireless technologies including fibre, PMP microwave, mmWave, HAPS, and satellite. It also depends on the spectrum protocols of the countries and their allotments procedures.

Methodology
The report finds the trends and development of 5G deployments through a well-established literature review of published data. For the cost estimation model, it only considers the capital expenditures and not the operational costs. Site acquisition and spectrum costs are also eliminated during estimation of deployment cost due to large variation from one city to another.
EVALUATION

The report provides a detailed insight into the 5G deployment issues and suggests possible solutions for the related policymakers.

Postives:

  • The report covers the technical matters with relation to the investment required for the deployments of 5G networks.
  • The report also estimates the capital expenditures for 5G deployments.

Negatives:

  • The cost model is good for an understanding of overall expenses. But it could not be used as the actual costs, as it is missing many factors like spectrum and site acquisition cost.
  • Moreover, it shows the average cost of deployment around the world and does not presents costs for a specific geography or area.
