Recognising African Excellence in Machine Learning

SUMMARY

This report reports about two new awards, the Kambule and Maathai awards, ran by the Indaba Organization, that aim at recognizing excellence in research and applications of machine learning and AI by African researchers and technology experts.

The Kambule and Maathai awards represent the third independent program the Indaba Organization runs. The prizes are a key part of the association's goal to Strengthen African Machine Learning and AI. Indaba's main programs are the Deep Learning Indaba, the IndabaX, and the Kambule and Maathai awards which are part of an integrated system, the paper notes.

The goal of the Deep Learning Indaba program is to strengthen African AI communities. The IndabaX program aims at generating AI leadership in Africa, while the new annual awards generate spaces of recognition.
