SUMMARY

This report examines how the Federal Government in the US can make broadband access increase and the actions that US Agencies are taking to stimulate private-sector investment in broadband.

The report takes a look at the broadband deployment and adoption in the US. According to recent studies, United States telecommunications providers invest around $78 billion on an annual basis in their broadband facilities across the nation. This includes investments in 4G and 5G services, fixed wireless services, fiber, cable, and upgraded DSL networks. Recent studies reveal improvements in almost every field of advanced telecommunications services but highlight as well as relevant gaps.

Over 90% of the US citizens in 2016 had access to fixed land-based broadband at speeds of 25 Mbps/3 Mbps, the paper notes. However, the remaining percentage represents over 24 million people who don't access to this service. 80% of them live in rural areas.

This digital gap in the US doesn't only have an impact on access and availability. Another recent survey showed that more than half of Americans in rural areas use the Internet at home compared to nearly 73% of urban people. This gap has pretty much remained constant over the last two decades.

The report also mentions that mobile broadband deployment and adoption also lags in rural communities. It shows that 72% of Americans aged 15 and older use smartphones – 12% more compared to 2015. The urban and rural gap remains when it comes to mobile broadband. Less than 64% of Americans areas who are 15 or older use smartphones. Citizens with lower incomes have fewer chances of having smartphones with mobile data plans, the paper adds.
