2018 Year in Review

SUMMARY

This paper on Android security notes that in 2018 just 0.08% of devices that used Google Play exclusively for application downloads were affected by PHAs.

On the contrary, devices with installed applications from outside of Google Play were attacked by PHAs eight times more frequently.

According to this study, in the last quarter of 2018, there was an 84% increase in devices that received a security update compared to the same quarter the year before.

In December 2018, the document explains, more than 95% of deployed Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL devices had had a security update in the last three months.

The report also indicates that Google Play Protect scans more than 50 billion applications daily across more than two billion devices. During its first calendar year, BTS prevented 242 builds with PHAs from entering the ecosystem, the study adds.

The study also highlights that in 2018, 0.45% of all Android devices with Google Play Protect had installed PHAs, compared to 0.56% of PHA-affected devices a year earlier.

In 2018 the total number of application installations in Google Play increased by 16% compared to a year earlier.
Google Play Protect avoided 1.6 billion PHA installation attempts from outside of Google Play in 2018, the report indicates.
