SUMMARY

This report on application security reveals that the number of registered vulnerabilities in 2017 increased twice as much compared to the previous year, and flaws in web applications were behind a good share of that rise.

The research found that cybercriminals are targeting further into the hardware and software stack which means that IT security professionals need to concentrate their defending efforts across the whole software ecosystem.

Regarding connected devices from the Internet of Things (IoT), the paper showed that this is still a high risk. The document also detects the most commonly occurring vulnerabilities, and key vulnerabilities, in web and mobile applications.

On the other hand, there is a growing reliance on open-source software by IT professionals which has ended up in a rise of exploitation of vulnerabilities in open source libraries and components by attackers.

As for encryption, it is a brilliant tool when used adequately, the report notes. With the General Data Protection Regulation that became effective in May of 2018, data privacy concerns are a priority and organizations must evaluate how the new regulations impacts on data security and application security.
