SUMMARY

This online report examined the general attitudes of Americans towards AI and reveals that US citizens show mixed support for the deployment of this new technology, and in fact, a significant minority don't support AI development at all.

Besides, this paper notes that most Americans, as well as the same proportion of EU respondents, think that AI and robots should be carefully handled.

Regarding the main Governance challenges that people believe will have the biggest impact on society, respondents mention the prevention of AI-assisted surveillance from violating privacy and liberties as the first one. Respondents showed concern as well for the use of AI to spread fake and dangerous content online. The use of AI technologies to carry out cyberattacks against organizations and governments is another top challenge mentioned by the report's respondents.

People in America, the study explains, have diverse levels of trust in several companies and organizations when it comes to AI management. University researchers are among the most trusted actors followed by the US military and the partnership between companies - that doesn't include Facebook - and scientific associations.

The average respondent thinks that there is a significant chance that high-level machine intelligence will be developed over the next decade. High-level machine intelligence is considered in this report as when machines can carry out nearly 100% of tasks that are financially relevant nowadays, in a better way than the average human at each one of these tasks. The report also points out that Americans are not too enthusiastic about the development of high-level machine intelligence. More people in the US believe that high-level machine intelligence will be dangerous than those who think it will be beneficial to society, the report says.
