PayPal mCommerce Index Trends Report

The research reveals that a mobile-optimized strategy is key for online retailers as more Australians are now inclined to buy online, particularly younger generations. 

The PayPal report examines Australia’s relationship with E-Commerce and examines three important trends in online retail: online sales events; the adoption of Visual Search and Shoppable Video; and the impact that the new 5G network is to make on E-Commerce.

The study reveals that 70% of Australian consumers are always searching for sales, while more than half of Australians have bought a product impulsively because of a sale. On the other hand, retailers are also keen on sales - over 50% believe it helps to attract new customers and nearly 40% say it increased their revenue.

The report explores the adoption of Visual Search and Shoppable Video and found that online shoppers tend to use their phones and take pictures of the products they would like to buy online. In addition, over 50% of the consumers surveyed have used Visual Search tools or have the intention to use them. Consumer interest in Visual Search is particularly strong among young people. Online buyers will opt for retailers that can offer Visual Search, the study suggests, as it's an intuitive and time-saving tool for consumers. However, retailers believe that the benefits of Visual Search and Shoppable Video will not be completely met until the arrival of 5G. It is also key that search results are fast to load in order to make the Visual Search experience successful. At the moment Shoppable Video tools might be pretty expensive for the average retailer but it is definitely a category to keep an eye on, the study says. 

The report concludes with a schematic but useful guide for brands and retails for mobile optimization.

Methodology
The PayPal mCommerce Index: Trends Report 2019 was commissioned by PayPal Australia and conducted by ACA Research. The study is based on an online survey with 1,018 consumers and 485 businesses.
