SUMMARY

This IBM paper reveals that more than half of pioneers in the automotive sector will launch their first commercial blockchain network at scale by 2022.

Despite this, the document notes that the automotive industry is still in the nascent stage when it comes to blockchain applications to businesses and product networks. 

The study also reveals that over 50% of surveyed executives think that new business models will influence investments in blockchain and more than 60% of them think that this technology will be a disruptive force in the automotive industry shortly.

The document includes a couple of examples of companies transforming supply chain financing with blockchain, embracing this technology to make supply chain visibility more efficient in the automotive sector.

It also mentions that IBM is in partnership with several automakers including BMW, Bosch, Ford, General Motors, Groupe Renault on a new organization known as the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI). This organization aims will be examining the use of blockchain to improve safety in the mobility sector while reducing costs and making it more accessible.

The report concludes with recommendations for executives to consider a few actions to help decide where they can extract value from blockchains and how they can get started.
