A Study of Automotive Industry Cybersecurity Practices

SUMMARY

This report on cybersecurity in the automotive sector notes that the surveyed companies show higher awareness of the cybersecurity challenges and a will to improve.

However, they also show concerns that they do not feel empowered to raise the issues they have to senior managers.

Regarding security software, the paper reveals that a large share of respondents to the survey are worried that cybersecurity practices are not keeping pace with the security scenario.

The majority of car manufacturers are still in charge of producing some original equipment, but their real strong point lies in research and development, design and marketing, handling the supply chain, and putting together the final product. Manufacturers depend on independent vendors who supply hardware and software parts to offer the latest in-vehicle technology and design.

Three-quarters surveyed in this document indicate their concern about the cybersecurity approach of automotive technologies that come from third parties. Nevertheless, less than half of respondents said that their organizations impose certain requirements on cybersecurity for products provided by third companies.

Carmakers and their suppliers also need to take a look at what the connected vehicles mean for consumer privacy and security, the study suggets. More connected vehicles are on the market, therefore software vulnerabilities are becoming more accessible to hackers. Failure to take these risks seriously might be an expensive error. This includes the effect they could have on consumer confidence, privacy, and corporate reputation.
