SUMMARY

This online report on blockchains technologies and digital identifications defines identity in an online context as the total of all the attributes that exist about a person in the digital world and which therefore is in constant evolution.

These data are usually under the control of organizations external to the person they are referring to. According to the decentralized identity paradigm, the user is at the heart of the framework and therefore there is no need for third parties.

Users should be in charge of their identity and also the data associated with it. This leads to the so-called self- sovereign identities (SSI). Following this approach, users have both a way of creating and being in control of identifiers as well as the facility to store data.

The paper also explores the requirements necessary to implement a decentralized identity framework. Blockchain is not necessary for decentralized identity but can be a useful tool for various elements of the decentralized identify framework.

The report also reviews the European regulation about digital identity. The most notable regulation dealing with identity in the EU is the electronic IDenti cation, Authentication and Trust Services regulation, the paper adds.
