SUMMARY

This document looks at how several blockchain leading companies are using the technology in telecoms. The report includes research on the work that seven CSPs – AT&T, Colt, Deutsche Telekom, Globe Telecom, SoftBank, Telefónica and Vodafone – are conducting with blockchain.

It also includes expert insights from Accenture on the most interesting use cases. The paper aims at offering the telecoms sector with the information necessary to make appropriate business decisions regarding blockchain adoption and deployment.

According to this study, Telefónica and Colt have already a fundamental role in the blockchain field. Both firms have finalized a blockchain proof concept that aims at settling voice transactions that take place between various operators. Telefónica is examining call detail records so that settlement is managed more easily.

For its part, Deutsche Telekom is putting in place blockchain technology to make roaming deals less complex. The firm's subsidiary Telekom Innovation Laboratories is also working on Hyperledger Fabric-based projects.

The paper refers to the role of blockchain and digital identification which eliminates the need for middle-parties thanks to smart contracts. In that respect, Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom are using blockchain to set a real-name authentication program developed to streamline verification and subscription processing.

SoftBank is working on a cross-borders secure identification system . AT&T, the paper adds, has taken part in a blockchain-based mobile authentication initiative. Vodafone is planning to launch blockchain-based projects concerning identity and supply chain management in two years or less.
