SUMMARY

This research on blockchain identified 65 existing blockchain use-cases for the environment.  This paper also identified huge potential to design blockchain-enabled “game changers” that could offer transformative solutions to issues related to the environment and sustainability.

According to the study, blockchain can create full transparency in supply chains. Products can be tracked completely from source to store as data on transactions is recorded throughout the supply chain on a blockchain.

The document also reveals that blockchain could modify the value way materials and natural resources as well as the way they are traded. This could make governments and people unleash financial value on items that are currently discarded or that are considered not to have an economic value. All in all, blockchain could help to realize a real circular economy.

Blockchain could also change access to capital and unleash the potential for investors in projects that are related to environment protection. Blockchain technology, the report adds, can change sustainability reporting and assurance, as it can help businesses handle, show and improve their performance.

The study also makes a special mention of how blockchain could be useful to make better decisions and be more efficient in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters.

The paper points out that the use of blockchain technologies to promote sustainability and drive growth will require decisive action from all stakeholders.
