SUMMARY

This study about cybersecurity in the EU notes that European countries hold 18 of the top 20 places in the global National Cybersecurity Index - this is a ranking of countries that assess how ready they are to avoid cyber threats and manage cyber attacks.

According to the brochure, 88% of internet users in the EU said they had important concerns about being targeted by cyber-attackers. And more than three-quarters of internet users were worried about their data not being kept safe by websites.

The research explains that EU's institutions put their efforts to make cybersecurity stronger and boost cyber resilience. The EU has a cybersecurity regulatory framework in place to do. The paper mentions some aspects of regulation such as the Directive on security of network and information systems (NIS) which offers the legal measures to promote the level of cybersecurity among EU member states.

Regarding data protection, the ePrivacy Directive ensures that communications are being kept confidential and establishes the rules on online tracking and monitoring. This regulation on privacy is being adapted to include other ways of communications like emails and messenger applications.

The EU Cybersecurity Act is worth a mention as well. This Act sets the framework for European Cybersecurity Certification for digital products, processes, and services that will be valid in the EU.

The document explains that it is key to establish a network of cybersecurity national centers with a new European Cybersecurity Industrial, Technology and Research Competence Centre at its center, to ensure access to current expertise and help implement cybersecurity solutions in the EU while ensuring cooperation between stakeholders in the long-term.
