SUMMARY

This research reveals that eCommerce among Canadian consumers is on the rise as the average number of online purchases increased mover than 50 percent between 2016 and 2018.

The study is based on a survey with 5,000 Canadians who bought online over in the past year and were asked about their buying habits, what products they buy, how much they spend and the technology used for eCommerce activities. The research aims to offer useful information to help businesses make wiser decisions and increase their revenues.

Buyers who buy online at least seven times per year account for over 50% of total online buyers. This figure increased by more than 40% compared to 2016. Equally, shoppers who buy online more than 40 times a year have also increased significantly. Most of the consumers in this segment are rather young, wealthy and tech-savvy.

The study classifies shoppers in four groups ranging from those who buy online less to those that make more purchases per year and spend more too. It offers tips to businesses on how to approach these buyers to give them the confidence to buy more from their online stores.

Among the study's findings, surveyors indicate that memberships are becoming more popular which is due to the services offered such as faster and cheaper delivery. In addition, buyers that feel they do not have enough information or control over the checkout process tend to abandon their carts. Those that are not pleased with the online shopping experience are also likely not to shop with that business anymore.

Regarding technology, voice-activated devices are expected to be on the rise in the near future becoming a real disruptor in consumer technology. The report concludes that businesses should pay close attention to mobile e-commerce and place mobile at the heart of their eCommerce strategy.
