SUMMARY

This paper explores Greater China’s growth as a leader in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), noting key trends, benefits, and challenges.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0 describes the junction of high internet speeds, big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), analytics, and artificial intelligence. As the producer, supplier, and end-user of most of the world’s IoT-related devices and systems, China is poised to be a leader of the latest industrial revolution, Industry 4.0.

This report documents the key development strategies, benefits, and challenges during China’s early establishment of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The development of IoT in China is strongly supported by all branches of government, national and local. Mobile IoT devices help accelerate the development and deployment of IIot in East Asia. For example, mobile technologies such as NB-IoT help China monitor electricity consumption in remote areas, enabling them to deliver effective electricity supply. Yet the pace of development will be determined by the ecosystem’s willingness to work collaboratively and develop interoperability among different companies and systems in a supply chain. Another challenge is securing the IIoT system, which will require security technologies that are specifically designed for IoT cybersecurity issues. This issue requires everyone in the IoT ecosystem to have a thorough understanding of their operational responsibilities and technical risks. At the moment, the largest profiteers in IIoT are component manufacturers and system integrators. However, as the industry grows, there will be greater demand for network operators and service platform providers.

In conclusion, digital technologies in East Asia steer the next industrial revolution, Industry 4.0. Consequently, Greater China is on the pathway to be one of the first countries to realize the benefit of integrating IoT into industrial manufacturing and the supply chain.
