End-to-end value chain digitisation

SUMMARY

This E-Commerce report on the new retail sector in China notes that this country has surpassed the US and become the world’s biggest online shopping market with online sales in the first quarter going up around 35% compared to the previous year.

The study takes a look at the shift from digital retail to what is defined as new retail. The paper aims at offering businesses operating in China insights into how to operate in that evolving consumer ecosystem, but also offers tips to companies planning to enter the Chines market, which is considered as the future of global retail innovation.

According to this PWC document, China’s retail market is expected to increase around 9% on an annual basis until 2021 - a slower pace compared to the 12% growth between the 2012 to 2016 period.

China’s retail market has seen over the last five years a substantial increase. But this rise has mainly impacted on the sales channels and marketing areas. The new retail period, the paper suggests, will go further and impact on the whole value chain.

New retail means complete stack digitization, the study notes. However, business impact, customer experience, and technology enablement should be at the heart of the digitization process. New retail is still in its nascent stage and therefore companies should not adopt new technologies until the basics of cloud, mobile, eCommerce and analytics are completely in place. The report also notes that the last few years have proved that the companies that benefited the most were those that established partnerships with others and collaborated at an early stage.
