SUMMARY

This Eurostat study reveals that just over one-third of EU companies used cloud computing in 2018, the majority for hosting their e-mail systems and storing files in an online form.

However, figures are not uniform across countries as there are relevant differences across them, the study shows. In Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, and Belgium more than 40% of companies used cloud computing while the percentage goes down to 10% in Romania and Bulgaria.

This report includes recent statistics on the use of cloud computing services in the European Union. Cloud computing involves two aspects, the research explains, a cloud infrastructure and software applications.

Cloud infrastructure involves the hardware resources necessary to support the cloud services being provided and would normally include server, storage and network components. Software applications make reference to software applications and computing power for running business applications.

The majority of EU firms, the report notes, used advanced cloud services relating to financial and accounting software applications, customer relationship management or to the use of computing power to run business applications.

The study also shows that last year, many more firms used public cloud servers than private cloud servers. The use of cloud computing went up specifically in large companies compared with data from 2014, the study indicates.
