SUMMARY

This paper by Ofcom reveals that consumers in the UK are upgrading to faster broadband services as the number of superfast broadband lines went up 17% this year.

The document also explains that the volume of data used on fixed and mobile connections both increased by around a quarter. 240GB is used on average monthly per fixed broadband connection while 2.9GB in are used on each mobile data connection per month.

The increase in data consumption is mainly to the rise of video streaming which went up with the rise of subscription-based platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

The use of mobiles to make phone calls has decreased again, the report found, as well as the number of text messages sent as people switch to messaging applications such as WhatsApp.

According to this Ofcom's report, there was no change in terms of revenues achieved by commercial TV and radio broadcasters which received less advertising revenue but growth in pay-TV services. The paper also highlights that spending on broadcast content also decreased in the studied period.
