Winning the global race to market

SUMMARY

This report assesses the development of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) in the UK. It covers three aspects of the development and deployment of CAV: i) current market trends, technologies, and roadmaps; ii) the UK’s deployment of CAV; iii) the effect of CAV on UK’s economy by 2030.

The emergence of CAVS will shift the worldwide automotive industry. More than 18 million new automated vehicles will be added to the global marketplace by 2030. There are five levels of driver automation. Levels 0 to 2 are driver supporting features. Levels 3 to 5 offer total driverless systems. Leading vehicle manufacturers, including Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla, provide level 2 driver assistance systems in the UK. And as early as 2021, the first Level 3 features, such as Highway Pilot and Traffic Jam Pilot, could be deployed in the UK.

The development and testing of automated vehicles in a country is a strong indicator of the nation’s readiness for CAVs. Market attractiveness, enabling regulations and infrastructures are the three key parameters to measure leading countries CAV deployment.

The report identifies four recommendations that will support CAV development in the UK: Change traffic laws to support the deployment of level 3 AVs.  Improve 4G network across roads. Encourage local authorities to collaborate with industry to support safety tenets. Lastly, industry leaders and world governments should establish international and integrated regulations that support new industry players.

For the UK to emerge as a global center of CAV development, the government will need to sustain support in terms of infrastructure and regulation.

Methodology
This report applies a comprehensive Connected Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) Deployment Index that measures a country’s CAV rollout process. The index has three benchmarks: Enabling Regulations, Enabling Infrastructure, and Market Attractiveness.
EVALUATION

This report, although specific to the UK, outlines national and international goals for advancing the connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) sector.

Table and graph illustrate data samples and expected rates of growth. Global indexes provide readers a global scope of the CAV industry. Finally, the recommendations in this report can be applied to government and business leaders that want to grow their stake in the CAV industry.
