SUMMARY

The mix between current online consumers spending more and more frequently along with newly connected buyers purchasing for the first time will boost online shopping growth, this research reveals.

The Nielsen Connected Commerce report offers insights into the global connected consumer, shopping behavior and trends, category evolution and limits, to examine future growth prospects.

Countries at less mature phases of E-Commerce development - Latin America, Africa/Middle East and parts of Southeast Asia - are still increasing buying penetration across services, entertainment, and durables categories. However, more mature online shopping markets experience increased online purchasing incidence and frequency. In the latter markets, online shopping is experiencing an expansion into consumables categories.

North America, Pacific, and North Asia are seeing rises in E-Commerce in FMCG categories — personal, health and household care, as well as packaged grocery products - the paper shows.

According to this Nielsen study, consumer penetration, volume, and frequency of online buys keep on growing, while buyers also turn more their focus on online shopping rather than on in-store as users gain confidence in buying online. This study suggests that buyers are acquiring entertainment and services categories more often online than in physical stores. On the other hand, durable categories are experiencing a bigger proportion of consumers buying online and in-store at the same frequency thanks to augmented and virtual reality services.
