SUMMARY

This report on cybersecurity in SMBs aims at helping businesses consider their potential vulnerabilities to prevent becoming a victim of a cyberattack, and if targeted to help companies identify the resources to help them in their response and recovery.

The first part of this study explains who is behind cyberattacks and the different types of cyber-attacks that exist. The study explains that phishing is likely to be one of the most usual types of cyberattacks against companies. Social engineering attacks are also discussed in this paper. These attacks infiltrate systems and data and exploit human psychology rather than using technical hacking techniques. The paper also takes a look at malware attacks and system vulnerabilities. The first section includes examples and case studies like the Atlanta ransomware attack.

The second chapter explores the best practices which start by examining the company's cybersecurity “posture,” or the present state of the company’s cybersecurity.

The last part is on crisis management. The paper suggests companies that have suffered an attack to be transparent about it and inform the different parties affected by the data breach about the company's best practice plan. There is also a section on cyber insurance at the end of the paper and a case study about Uber who paid off Hackers to hide a 57-million user breach, the study notes.
