SUMMARY

This report on e-commerce, social media, cryptocurrency, sustainability, and esports, among other topics, reveals that the migration of sports broadcasting online has been one of the most significant trends that was observed in 2018.

The average number of sports watched on broadcast TV has not changed much compared to the second quarter of 2017. The number of online channels has increased slightly mainly due to the interest shown by younger users in North America, MEA and the Asia Pacific, the research says. However, at the same time, more users will turn to digital to watch their preferred sports.

The study examines the role of social media in people’s daily lives. Around 50% still use social media to connect with friends and family. However, many users (40%) turn to social media for entertaining reasons. The UK has the highest representation of social media users that use these channels to entertain themselves. Overall, more than half of the respondents watched and read entertaining content, while nearly half clicked on a post to read a news article. More than one-fourth bought a product or service via social media. The report indicates that 32% of all users in the UK and U.S. admitted having deactivated or closed a social media account over the past year. A good share of them considers social media as shallow and personal image-driven channels.

The paper also takes a look at the increasingly prominent role of Esports which are now known by nearly 70% of internet users in the UK and the U.S. alone. It also explores issues around data protection and privacy and notes that users are more privacy-aware at present, but still don’t feel in control.

Regarding sustainability, the data shows that younger generations are more likely than any other generation to say that they would pay extra for sustainable products. On the other hand, the research also puts the focus on fast-fashion which could be under the spotlight soon.
