Opportunity beyond the hype

SUMMARY

The report on the present E-Commerce landscape in MENA indicates that the market is worth more than $8 billion nowadays and according to estimations it will reach over $28 billion by 2022.

According to this study, MENA consumers are among the most connected in the world. Online buyers in MENA prefer smartphones to other devices for online research and online shopping, the paper says.

The document notes that over 60% of shoppers in the UAE and KSA and more than 40% in Egypt have bought something online at least once. This is not too different compared to more mature e-commerce countries. Nevertheless, MENA buyers have not integrated completely online shopping into their shopping habits at this moment. They usually buy less frequently online than in physical stores. The average US buyer makes 19 purchases online per year, while MENA buyers purchase online between two to four times a year.

This report also indicates that the Middle East and North Africa’s E-Commerce market shows more fragmentation compared to more mature international countries.

According to this paper, the region has seen a lot of progress over the last few years in addressing some of the problems around the e-commerce ecosystem. However, there is still room for improvement in some areas including online payment and logistics.
