Swipe up to the right: South East Asia’s $100 bn Internet economy

SUMMARY

This report on South East Asia reveals that mobile Internet is changing the region which has at present the most engaged mobile Internet users in the world.

Southeast Asia has 360 million Internet users and 90% of them connect to the Internet mainly through their mobile phones and who are increasingly buying products online as well as planning trips and ordering food online.

The paper analyses the changes in consumer behavior that South East Asia has gone through and notes that the Internet economy has reached $100 billion for the first time in 2019. Online shopping and Ride-Hailing are achieving results that go beyond expectations, while online media and online travel grow at a steady rate, the document adds.

The research takes a look at the regional differences as well. The Internet economies in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines are seeing increases of 20% to 30% on an annual basis. Indonesia and Vietnam deserve a special mention, with growth rates of over 40% a year.

Companies are concentrating on driving engagement rather than on acquiring new customers. Organizations have expanded their scope across industries which have made competition more intense while users enjoy now more choices and lower prices.

Regarding financial services, the implementation of Digital Payments is expected to go beyond the $1 trillion marks by 2025 – which represents one in every two dollars spent in South East Asia.
