SUMMARY

This report shows that nearly half of retail E-commerce sales in the U.S. are expected to be mobile by 2020 and that U.S. online shoppers would like to pay with mobile all the time.

The report offers a schematic overview of the current state of the economic and infrastructure situation in the U.S. followed by a description of the E-Commerce landscape in the country.

Amazon, eBay, and Etsy are the leaders of the online marketplaces in the U.S, the research notes. However, a case study which is included in the document and compares online platforms Amazon and Etsy explains that millennials are ready to pay more for a product from a corporate socially responsible company and that in that respect, Etsy could be a better option for younger generations, according to the study. 

Etsy grew 40% in sales in the second half of 2018, proving to have become widely accepted option among U.S. consumers. In addition, the online platform created an ‘Etsy Gift Finder’ section which could help them to gain market share. If an Etsy user allows it, other users can view which items they have favorited which makes life easier when trying to find the perfect gift for friends or relatives.

While online shopping penetration is expected to increase at 11% in 2018, and mobile shopping is also becoming more popular, the number one concern with buying via social media is still security.

The study also reveals that China is the biggest E-Commerce importer though most consumers buy online only domestically. Price is as well the top factor for online shoppers in the U.S.
