Survey Of Technology Executives And The General Population Shows Excitement And Curiosity Yet Uncertainty And Worries That Artificial Intelligence Could Be A Tool Of Division

SUMMARY

The 2019 Edelman report shows that the majority of people are optimistic about AI, in particular executives in the technology sector.

AI is considered to have the potential to change businesses, industries, and even social services very soon and in a way never seen before. The majority of respondents think that AI will arrive over the next 5 to 10 years, while experts in the field think that it will arrive decades later.

The survey also highlights the concerns around AI and how it could produce issues with job losses that would affect the poor in society. Autocratic powers - who can access and leverage data content processed with AI technologies - could growingly manipulate and controlled populations, some respondents believe. At the same time, the public trust of content is also under threat with the increase of AI-powered deepfake videos - a third of respondents’ are worried that these videos could lead countries into war.

The AI future has great potential but it contains significant risks too, the study concludes. There is no doubt from the results that the business community and governments have to be cautious and react to ensure that the potentially dangerous effect of AI does not make society give away the benefits of AI. Also, respondents agreed that it is critical that tech companies behind AI products show transparency about how AI operates and to show how it offers positive value to society.
