SUMMARY

This Cisco report takes a look at the present email and phishing scenario and reveals that email is the main vector for the distribution of malware and phishing.

The research gives an overview of the most usual email-based scams nowadays. The first one described in this paper are emails that supposedly come from Microsoft or Google and note that the recipient's email address is will be disconnected due to errors, for instance. To avoid this, users are requested to verify the address at a certain link. This constitutes an attempt to phish the login credentials. With them, cybercriminals could try to log into other Microsoft or Google services and get the account holder's contacts.

Business email compromise is another type of common email-based scams. The cyber attacker pretend to be an executive to try to make recipients perform their business role - for illegal purposes - like transferring them money. Digital extortion and packaging and invoice spam are also mentioned in this paper as frequent types of email-based scams.

This Cisco study indicates that an important share of malware is still nowadays sent via email. Malware is usually served either through attachments such as business documents or by links included within the message body.

Finally, this report offers some insight into email protection and examples of how to protect against email attacks.
