SUMMARY

This report provides insight into the development of mobile technology across global markets. It summarizes progress including network test and trials, deployments and the availably of a verity of service with different spectrum bands.

LTE was the fastest developing technology as of 2018. Around 44% of the global mobile subscribers have access to LTE.  This technology is regulated by 3GPP which defined the protocol for global standards. There are various updates released by 3GPP for LTE, like LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro. The 15th update of LTE was the last one, and from then the mobile community is defining standards for the 5G technology. The initial 5G technology systems will integrate with existing LTE networks and will slowly move to the standalone 5G systems.

The report finds that there were 871 operators investing in LTE during 2018. Around 721 operators were providing LTE services in 213 countries, 274 operators were providing Advanced LTE in 122 countries. Almost 201 operators in 83 countries were investing in 5G during the year. They were in the testing phase or licensed to conduct field trials of mobile 5G testing.

The report concludes that the LTE will continue to grow in 2019 and 2020, along with the launch of new 5G networks. The report tracks hundreds of investments in LTE in 2018. Meanwhile, there were eleven operators who materialized their investments in 5G launch. These include AT&T of the US, Elisa of Finland and Estonia, Etisalat of UAE, Fastweb and TIM of Italy, among others.
