SUMMARY

This report ranks the countries for their 5G readiness. The US and China are moving ahead of other countries in terms of 5G deployment. South Korea and Japan follow closely behind.

The US shows much progress in 2018 due to a trial launch of 5G services with small-cell sites and initial spectrum auctions. Most of the trial 5G launches have taken place until now consists of the mid-band spectrum like 3.5GHz. Italy, Spain, the UK, US, South Korea, and Australia have already started auctions of commercial 5G spectrums in 2018. For instance, South Korea awarded 800MHz spectrum to three of its mobile network operators for $186 million each. The governments are focusing on 5G in their policymaking by reforming siting and spectrum policies. There will be around 80 5G commercial operators in around 40 countries by 2020.

The UK is leading in special funding programs for 5G developments. The country allocated $260 million for the 5G development and trials. The EU has also started a new European Electronic Communications Code to encourage infrastructure investments and simplifying regulation procedures. The EU estimated that the deployment of 5G will add $1 trillion and 1.3 million jobs in the European economy by 2025.

The report concludes that China and the US have the highest readiness to launch 5G by 2020. Most of the initial 5G networks around the world will be in the mid-band or sub-6 spectrum. Governments are taking actions to smoothen the process of 5G launch by reforming siting policies and auction fees.

Methodology
The report is based on the comparison approach for the “5G readiness”. The development of 5G for the countries is measured on different metrics including actions by MNOs, equipment manufacturers, regulators, and policymakers toward the early launch of 5G.
EVALUATION

The report provides good investigations on the actions being taken place for the deployment of 5G across the world.

Positives:

  • The investigation focused on the countries policies, actions of operators and equipment manufacturers.
  • It also provides a comparison of the US with other countries for 5G readiness.
