Emergence of a new civic os

SUMMARY

This report demonstrates that the Indian civic society desires the benefits and opportunities of the Internet of Things (IoT).

India is forecasted to experience economic growth at 7-8%. At the center of this bullish estimation is the drive to establish a digital economy. Reports indicate that mature and developing economies will achieve the benefits of IoT. India has more than 100 smart city projects planned. Cities will have evolved communication capabilities, between humans and machines. IoT services, products, and systems can optimize resource use, reduce negative environmental effects, and provide unique user experiences.

What is the current knowledge of IoT in India? One-third of respondents still believe that IoT is limited to smartphones only.  Education is required to advance the common perception of IoT. What are their expectations for the future of IoT? Concerning household duties, 90% of respondents are open to the idea of IoT assisting with chores. For example, more than 9 out of 10 Indians (91.1%) are open to experimenting with a device that monitors the usage of household appliances in real-time. Healthcare is India’s main public service concern with over 80% expecting IoT to help family healthcare services.

This technology has the potential to redefine many aspects of life, both professional and personal. Social behaviors and cultures that are by-products of IoT society are called Civic Operating System (Civic OS). The Civic OS is defined as the coexistence and cohabitation, and communication between humans and machines. The Civic OS is a part of the fourth industrial revolution, which is simultaneously sprouting. To deliver the benefits of Civic OS and IoT, the core concepts need to be understood and internalized across industries, cultures, and governments.
