SUMMARY

This KPMG study on India's digital landscape reports that the digital segment is still the standard-bearer of growth of the sector in the fiscal year 2019, with a 43.4% increase making the overall segment reach INR173 billion.

The rapid growth in infrastructure, the document says, led to a demand rise for content. The resultant consumption was boosted by a focus on the provision of digital content by platforms. The advertising sub-segment within the digital segment experienced a rise of 38 percent in FY19. Digital is at present at an essential element of media strategies across sector verticals.

Regarding TV, revenues went up 9.5 percent in FY19, a similar figure compared to 2018, and reached a size of INR714 billion. The print sector experienced a subdued increase of 4.5 percent in FY19 reaching INR333.2 billion.

As for the animation and VFX segment, this also saw a significant increase of over 18 percent in FY19, reaching INR87.7 billion. The gaming segment achieved very good results in the M&E industry in FY19, increasing by 41.6 percent,

The study explains that the Out of Home segment increased at a rate of 5 percent and reached a size of INR34 billion, which is less than what was initially expected.

The digital segment should continue to be one of the main drivers of growth as digital consumption is becoming ubiquitous, the document says. The digital segment should experience a fast increase of 29.1 percent, according to estimations.

The paper also analyzes the main technological innovations in the media and entertainment sector which aim to boost customer experience by offering better quality and performance, modern and innovative channels for content consumption, and provide more efficiency for companies in the M&E field. The study takes a close look  as well at the launch of 5G and how this technology is going to impact positively on the industry.
