SUMMARY

This report profiles innovative companies that use the Internet of Things (IoT) to identify and solve modern problems in industries, infrastructure and occupations. As IoT expands, we are experiencing new ways of connecting, producing and processing. As a result, IoT can influence our daily lives. At this moment, IoT devices are being used in the home, and its uses are expanding.

This report identifies IoT innovations in numerous sectors, including smart cities, logistics, agriculture, energy and safety. IoT innovations in cities allow infrastructure and data communicate with sensors and AI, which offer greater intelligence to urban spaces. Yet, city-wide smart projects are costly and require solutions to many issues, including privacy, security and affordability. In the area of logistics, IoT is helping increase productivity. Greater connectivity allows better tracking of goods, management of fleets and monitoring of perishable goods. Similarly, in the agriculture industry, smart sensors are improving irrigation systems, and wearable livestock monitors are helping farmers maximize their time with heifers. Moreover, IoT is improving efficiency in often overlooked areas, including building maintenance. Sensors in washrooms track cleanliness and inventory. The IoT is improving efficiency across sectors, including public safety, sustainability and urban space.

Despite the potential to increase connectivity, efficiency and productivity, companies face growing challenges. One challenge is cybersecurity. Many IoT devices contain flaws that make them vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Another issue that companies will face is how to organize, record and evaluate the massive amounts of data that will be produced. Finally, different organizations and industries use their own standards. This lack of standards may halt IoT implementation or demoralize manufacturers from developing new technology in fear of changing industry guidelines. In order for IoT to grow, solutions must answer these challenges.
