Old hacks, new devices

SUMMARY

The report reveals that threats that have as targets weak or default credentials and unpatched vulnerabilities represent 87% of the total number of threats.

The figure of connected IoT devices is likely to have passed the world's population, around 7.5 billion in 2018 or the beginning of 2019. This figure could very easily triple by 2021. This report on security and IoT notes that the huge growth of IoT devices is grabbing the attention of cybercriminals. The issue is if regulations on data protection will be introduced quick enough.

According to this study on the IoT, the deployment of huge quantities of computing power without considering security and privacy as a priority has resulted in a new target that cyber attackers are only now starting to exploit.

This threat needs urgent measures by manufacturers, lawmakers and all stakeholders responsible for connecting people to the internet, the paper concludes.
