SUMMARY

This GSMA report on the state of the mobile industry in Latin America and its impact on economy and society reveals that mobile adoption will three-quarters of the population by 2025.

In Latin America, some countries are reaching saturation in terms of mobile subscribers while there is still room for growth in others such as Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

The paper also discusses the region's smartphone adoption which is strong across Latin America and continues to experience quick growth. 4G adoption reached 35% of total mobile connections in 2018 and will overtake 3G as the main technology by the end of 2018. As for 5G, this network's launched is not expected in the area until the middle of the next decade, the study states.

This GSMA report also takes a look at the economic contribution made by the mobile ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean. The region's mobile economy will create about $330 billion of economic value added. On the other hand, mobile operators are also making a significant contribution to the Internet of Things while the number of IoT connections is expected to triple by 2025, reaching 1.3 billion.

Mobile connectivity is a key to promoting digital inclusion and economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean, the report notes. There has been significant progress to date, but still around 50% of the area's population is offline and by 2015 around 242 million Latin Americans will still remain excluded from the digital perspective and therefore unable to take advantage of the many opportunities that the Internet offers. The paper concludes that stakeholders in the mobile industry along with governments should take action to limit the barriers of mobile internet adoption.
