SUMMARY

This report takes a look at the role of cloud platforms in the financial services sector and notes that the cloud will be key as a platform for changing current IT infrastructure and as a tool for enabling new, technology-based innovations.

The paper found that companies in the financial services industry expect a considerable change toward public cloud over the next two years. Companies also think that public cloud will be the main venue for more than one-quarter of workloads over that time.

Besides, more than half of the firms surveyed expect their IT environments to be multi-cloud. Companies expect their IT environments to be a combination of on-premises and externally hosted cloud infrastructure.

Agility is at the top of the list of cloud adoption drivers as financial services firms look for ways to be innovative quickly to gain new market opportunities that come along with emerging technologies, like AI and blockchain. Cost savings is a relevant metric in the modernization side of cloud implementation as financial services firms look to bring costs down through more operating efficiency and data center consolidation. Performance and availability are also key for financial services companies and another reason for cloud adoption.

The report revealed that financial services companies lack the skills necessary to manage cloud platforms, which will make many of these firms go out and to look for professional services to enable effective use of the cloud. The paper also notes that organizations in the financial services industry top the total study in identifying emerging technologies as key IT priorities in the near future.
