SUMMARY

This research report gives an overview of the state of the US online retail sector in 2019 and offers new insights into global E-Commerce trends and buying behavior.

The report highlights the growing importance of E-Commerce nowadays which actually represents more than three-quarters of global sales.

The study classifies North American buyers in four different types: Consumers that follow trends, low spenders who prefer to buy in-store than E-Commerce; engaged buyers who usually opt for familiar brands, enjoy shopping and internet buying and pay high attention to online reviews; smart consumers who tend to conduct online research before making a purchase decision; and practical buyers who do not take particular pleasure in shopping or E-Commerce, rely on familiar brands, prefer to conduct online research but would rather make the actual purchase in-store.

The report finds that nearly three-quarters of surveyed respondents in North American stick with a brand or product they are happy with. It also reveals that January is the busiest sales month excluding November and December. Global consumers are buying online more than ever before, while Japanese online buyers spend the most on average according to a global ranking. Another global trend is that consumers tend to buy to relax, however, whether they prefer to buy online using their phone, tablet or computer depends on the geographic region where they live. The study reveals that marketing and brand creation are among sellers' main challenges and that an omnichannel strategy is also a key to merchants.

The report concludes with a brief overview of the most popular online selling products per country.
