Insights from the Refinitiv 2019 Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Global Study

SUMMARY

This study on AI and machine learning predicts that these technologies will be the biggest enabler of competitive advantage in the financial services sector.

Refinitiv’s research is based on a survey of around 450 financial-institution leaders and data scientists. The paper shows the degree to which machine learning is already becoming a key part of managing the business. Financial companies have already tested machine learning, and are now implementing it in key business areas - financial risk management, pre-trade analytics, and portfolio optimization.

The study reveals that the key is data and data management. In that respect data of poor quality is the biggest challenge to machine learning adoption.

Data scientists are employed to create models and algorithms that will make their organization leader. However, there is a gap between the vision at the board level and the reality at the office. C-level executives think it is relevant to be seen using the latest technologies for competitive advantage however they could be overstating the firm’s actual machine learning adoption.

The paper also explains that there is a disparity in how technologies are being adopted and used in different countries. Financial organizations in the United States and Canada are the leaders, the report notes. Asian companies lead in some areas - for instance, machine learning as a key to business strategy.  While European firms lead in terms of machine learning deployment.
