Bsa Global Software Survey

SUMMARY

This report on software management reveals that 37 percent of software installed on personal computers is still unlicensed despite CIOs' acknowledgment that unlicensed software generates serious security risks.

This study of the use of unlicensed software notes that organizations that put in place the necessary measures to improve software management count on a strong tools to lower down security risks, grow business opportunities and, decrease downtime.

According to the paper, there is no doubt that in times of cybersecurity risk, companies need to take the key step of evaluating what is in their network and getting rid of unlicensed software. That way they will reduce the risk of dangerous cyber attacks, the document states.

Among the paper's main findings, the use of unlicensed software is gradually being reduced though it is still widespread. The overall commercial value of unlicensed software has seen a decrease too. However, most of the countries examined for this report still have unlicensed rates of at least 50%.

CIOs are aware of the risky and expensive costs of using unlicensed software, the report notes. Companies have high chances of encountering malware when they acquire or install an unlicensed software package or purchase a PC with unlicensed software on it. Malware attacks can end costing companies more than $2 million on average per attack and nearly two months to resolve.

With increasing costs from malware, companies are also resorting to fully licensed software that can be upgraded with the most recent updates as a main line of defense against malware attacks, and similar security risks.

The paper also notes that companies can also put in place software asset management best practices to make their software asset management more efficient and achieve important results.
