Early adopters combine bullish enthusiasm with strategic investments

SUMMARY

This report summarizes the state of AI development and application in the enterprise. The report is based on a data sample from 1100 business executives and managers in the US.

They qualified for the survey if they were responsible for or involved in AI activities in their company. The report is the 2nd edition of a report that was originally published in 2017.

The report finds that AI projects have penetrated most companies in various industries and AI is making fast progress in the corporate world. These early adopters are in general very bullish about their AI project. 83% state that they see substantial or moderate benefits flowing from AI projects.

The key cognitive technologies applied  are machine learning (58%), deep learning (50%), natural language processing (60%) and computer vision (62%). 37% of respondents say that their companies have invested 5 m$ or more in AI. While tech companies get the best return on their significant investments, the life sciences and health industry see only low returns on their significant investments.

The executives see as the biggest hurdles for their AI projects implementation issues (39%), integrating AI in the processes of the company (39%) and data issues like cyber security (39%).

The report concludes that the early adopters of AI are mostly enthusiastic about the outlook and payoff of the technology. There are identifiable hurdles like execution excellence and especially the aspect of cyber security. However, especially cloud technology and a range of off-the shelf-products allow companies an easy entry to AI in order to try the technology out.

EVALUATION

This report gives an excellent overview of the state of AI in US-based companies.

However, due to the skewed sample ("early adopters") the report can't claim to give a fully representative picture for AI development within American business (which would be probably overly ambitious at this point in the development cycle) . In addition, many of the used terms and concepts are relatively vague and not clearly defined  (which is a consequence of the relative briefness of the report). Our take: Outstanding start for an overview but deeper reading required to fully grap the AI development.
