The latest trends from our Q4 2019 survey of 17,000+ developers

SUMMARY

This report reveals that JavaScript is still the most popular programming language, as over 12M developers are using it across the globe.

However, Python added 2.2M net new developers in 2018 which means that it is the second-largest programming language community overall at present.

The paper also analyses the state of open-source software and notes that more than 50% of developers contribute to it. The main reason why developers contributing to open-source projects is to improve their coding skills but also because they believe in the benefits of open source. Nearly 50% of open-source contributors expect organizations to back and contribute to open-source communities.

The study highlights that developers using CI/CD tools are more likely to be professional developers. More than half of developers using these tools work for companies with more than 10 people involved in software development.

The report also takes a look at the situation of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality practitioners. In most cases, they are hobbyists with a different range of interests and skills.
More than 50% of AR and VR hobbyists work professionally in at least one other development area, the study shows.
