SUMMARY

The 2019 State of Mobile Web report offers insight into some of the trends and growth challenges of internet users in Africa as the smartphone adoption quickly grows.

The research points out that mobile data cost remains a major issue across Africa. However, Opera's data compression technology helped to save over 100 million dollars in mobile data costs in 2018, according to this document.
According to several reports mentioned in this study, it is expected that Africa reaches 300 million new internet users by 2015.

The paper highlights the opportunities that smartphone adoption brings for mobile developers such as Opera to increase their user base. According to some studies, Android is the most preferred operating system in the African region, followed by iOS. The usage of other platforms like Windows, Nokia, and BlackBerry, is seeing an 11% decline every year.

There is strong competition on smartphones from other categories of applications, but mobile browsers have remained a very popular category of applications, the document explains.

The report points out that Opera News is a service inside Opera’s mobile browsers and a standalone content platform application for Android and iOS. Globally. This service has a reach of over 150 million users per month.

Besides, Opera News soon became the most downloaded news app in Africa with over 10 million downloads in the first half-year since it was launched into the market. It became more popular during the football World Cup in 2018 as the application included channels with live football scores and news about the sports event.
