A survey of CEOs and Consumers in the Greater Bay Area

SUMMARY

This report on eCommerce in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) – with 70 million people consisting of Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and seven other cities – talks about the rise of smart consumers who are increasingly using mobile devices for all their eCommerce needs.

This paper examines the factors driving this mobile-centric world. The document is based on surveys with 1,400 consumers across ten cities in the Greater Bay Area, and another of around 300 CEOs.

Online buyers in GBA, the study revealed, already consider themselves as smart consumers. This means that they rely more on their mobile devices than other buyers in other locations. According to the paper's findings, more than half of the people surveyed in mainland China think their online spending will go beyond their offline spending in the next 12 months.

The research also shows that CEOs consider data analytics and artificial intelligence as an essential element to improve online customer experience.

Pressure on retailers is also increasing, the document explains, as omnichannel is not far from becoming the norm. On the other hand, online retailers also have to take data protection and security very seriously, while new technologies have to be adopted in an always changing scenario. This affects logistics firms that help online retailers stock their physical stores, carry out online orders and take care of the returns of unwanted products.
