Risks & Opportunities For DoD

SUMMARY

This report summarises the state of 5G technology and its impact on US security and defence.

The shift in technology always provides most of its benefit to early adopters. The country who will be able to lead in the implantation of 5G programs, will get the most revenue go with tremendous economic and strategic remunerations. The leading country will also set the standards for others to be followed.

AT&T and Verizon were the first to develop 4G LTE across the US on 700 Megahertz (MHz) in 2010. The US became the leading country with inclusive fast speed networks at that time. The development led to a demand for new mobile phones with 4G supporting semiconductors. The software companies in the US also changed their trends accordingly and developed new services for faster networks. And by the time when the 4G LTE adopted by other countries, US software and hardware companies were leading in the supply of LTE products and secured major market share around the world.

The LET competitor landscape has gone through many changes in the last decade. Chinese Huawei grew multiple folds from $28 billion in 2009 to $107 billion in 2018. Ericsson and Nokia showed negative growth in a similar period. A decade ago, the global top ten internet companies were US-based and now four are Chinese in this list.

The report also mentioned that the deployment of the 5G will change the atmosphere in which US DoD functions. Moreover, the world is developing 5G with focus on the sub-6 spectrum. In US 5G sub-6 spectrum is only reserved for DoD activities. This scenario will not allow US 5G developers to gain market shares outside of the US.
