Impact on Public Safety Communications

SUMMARY

This document recommends policymakers, governments and technology leaders collaborate to harness the benefits of the Internet of Things (IoT) on public safety communications.

Internet of Things-enabled devices can provide many benefits to public safety, ranging from pervasive network security, real-time problem solving, and seamless information availability.

Due to the early emergence of digital technological communication, some issues are yet to be fully explored and resolved. The challenges to full IoT implementation are numerous, from cybersecurity to interoperability, and data congestion to privacy. For instance, IoT’s impact on human relationships and emotions has not been fully explored. Further, accurate, fair and efficient data collection has not been attained at a universal scale. The costs of solving IoT security vulnerabilities and connection issues are critical to lives and infrastructures. This report outlines a general best practice for IoT devices that serve the public safety sector.

The report recommends multiple stakeholders collaborate to closely track the IoT environment as it develops. How does this look? Device manufacturers and system administrators need to review standardized protocols connecting devices to the Internet. This information should be shared between various stakeholders, especially end-users. To harness the full potential of IoT in the context of public safety, information must be shared collaboratively, the information should dictate training and education, and, finally, public safety and privacy requirements should be incorporated into IoT devices.
