SUMMARY

This report on the mobile market, key trends in the mobile sector and its impact on the economy notes that 5G will bring with it many new services as operators go beyond their traditional business to explore new opportunities.

This GSMA study reveals that by 2015 there will be three times more the number of global IoT connections and that the global revenue of IoT will reach $1.1 trillion. The research discusses the massive transformation that the content sector is experiencing driven by changing consumer habits, new market players, and different ways of producing and distributing content. In this context, many telecom operators are launching projects onto the content sector or increasing their content offerings. The paper states that operators have also become more interested in AI which will be extremely relevant to businesses and digital transformation over the coming years.

All these new opportunities, the paper notes, bring a world of opportunities to give the mobile operator revenue a boost. That is especially relevant in developing countries, which are still struggling due to slowing subscriber growth, regulatory intervention, and high competition. In any case, the mobile sector is expected to generate an annual average growth rate of 1.4% between 2018 and 2025, according to this GSMA report.

This paper also refers to the economic impact on the socio-economic development of the mobile industry. Mobile technologies and services generated $3.9 trillion of economic value - 4.6% of GDP - in 2018. This economic contribution will reach 4.8% of GPD by 2013. Furthermore, 5G technologies are expected to generate $2.2 trillion to the global economy by 2024.

As for 5G, this technology was first launch in the US and South Korea in the last quarter of 2018 and 16 countries will have launched 5G networks by the end of 2019, the report states. It will take a bit of time for 5G to reach critical mass, but some countries will experience quick growth, such as South Korea, the US, and Japan.
