SUMMARY

This report, which analyzes the performance of the Shanghai Stock Exchange Sci-Tech Innovation Board over the first quarter of 2020, reveals that despite the abrupt downturn caused to many sectors by the novel coronavirus outbreak China's long-lasting projects have not been affected deeply by the coronavirus crisis and that includes its financial sector’s opening-up.

Public equity markets tend to shrink as a consequence of events of the magnitude of the Covid-19 spread, the report explains. However, China’s mainland found its stocks in a shape better than those of every main bourse across the globe. The paper notes that China became a haven for international investors.

Also, tech stocks overall lost less over this coronavirus period – and so the same across the world. The reason why is related to the very nature of the current Covid-19 crisis. Transportation, energy, retail were hardest hit. On the other hand, the Information and Communications Technology sector did not suffer as much and is even seeing new opportunities in the quickly evolving digital ecosystem, the study points out.

The Star Market as well as its Shenzhen counterpart, the ChiNext board, performed pretty well in the first quarter of 2020. The total market cap of companies listed therein last year increased by more than 4% over this period, reaching CNY 908 billion at the end of this quarter. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the paper adds, there were also a few decent IPOs in Q1 2020.
