This document identifies a growing interest in Big Data technologies among businesses looking to rearchitect their operation to remain competitive.  

Big Data refers to a wide range of technologies that identify, store, and process data to solve complicated objectives. Due to the proliferation of data from the web, social media, and smartphones, Big Data has many applications, from customer service to robotics. This survey asks organizations what is the state of their Big Data deployment strategy, what are the expected benefits, and what are their challenges?

Big Data investment is driven by a competitive ecosystem that is rapidly digitally transforming. Half of the respondents fully implemented Big Data, in comparison to only 18% of respondents last year. Further, 81% of respondents claim they are increasing investment in Big Data projects. The common factor driving Big Data investments is the fear of losing a competitive edge. Growing investments also show that business leaders have a better understanding of the value of Big Data. Enterprise leaders understand that measuring the full potential of Big Data technologies is not easy (47%). Therefore, project plans need a reasonable implementation timeline. When designing a project plan, this report advises leaders to identify the scope, expected benefits, the costs.

Digital transformation will change business operations across industries and workforces. Companies should be mindful of how Big Data technologies will impact various employees. IT departments are the cornerstone of digital transformation across sectors. Big Data technologies can aid IT departments optimize their processes and upgrade their skills. However, early adoption is a key to maintaining a competitive edge as Big Data enters the mainstream, it will be difficult for laggards to discover advantageous insights.
