Context, Consumption, Control

SUMMARY

This report on the state of mobile internet and data landscape in Kenya explores the country's mobile internet and data landscape from three perspectives: context, consumption, and control.

The document gives an overview of Kenya's background and landscape, while it also explores the use of megabytes, and explains ways to manage megabytes.

Up to 2010 people with a bit of time and money to access the Internet would mainly do it from a cybercafé. The paper describes how cyber cafés were key in Internet adoption in Kenya and gives an overview of the evolution of mobile phones and smartphones in the country and their adoption by users.

Regarding connectivity, according to this study, there are between 12m and 21m Kenyans online, depending on the sources. Compared to other countries in the East African region, Kenya has the lowest price per Mbit per second in Africa, the research says.

Kenya’s megabytes are a type of currency, the report says. Users spend most of their time searching for content, on social media, and sports, sex, and stories.

The research also takes a look at mobile data consumption of online ads, mobile software, zero-rating applications and recommendations to mobile operators.
